  • This SL version of the Kenevo trims suspension travel from 180- to 170mm
  • But you save a lot of weight, too, making it a lot more agile on the trails
  • For fit riders who aren't intimidated by technical descents, the Kenevo SL can squeeze a lot of riding into fewer hours

Specialized has added a new version of its Kenevo, blurring the lines between analogue and e-bikes.

Most riders would struggle to recognize the Kenevo SL as an e-bike. It has a smaller battery pack and mid-drive motor than other Kenevos, making it nearly indistinguishable from a conventional mountain bike of similar wheel size and suspension travel.

The design objective was to create an e-bike with 170mm of suspension travel and a very low riding mass. With its Kenevo SL weighing only 18.5kg, this e-bike is very close to an unassisted 170mm travel mountain bike in weight.

Very close to a 'normal' bike in kilos

Compared to Specialized’s own Enduro model, the Kenevo SL is only 4kg heavier, whilst being 5.5kg lighter than a conventional Kenevo.

How did they make it so much lighter than their other Kenevo e-bikes, without sacrificing suspension travel? It uses a 240W output mid-drive motor, drawing energy from a 320Wh battery pack, compared to the standard Kenevo’s 560W motor and 700Wh battery capacity.

Thanks to its low weight the Kenevo SL is not only more agile than other enduro e-bikes, making it more responsive to ride, but it also retains very useable range.

Ideal for experienced and fit riders

The standard battery should see you pedalling for four and a half hours, with motor-assistance. You can increase that to seven hours, by using the 160Wh range extender, which looks like a water bottle and sits in a traditional frame cage.

Rolling 29er wheels and featuring 170mm of front and rear wheel suspension travel, the Kenevo SL is capable of conquering the steepest and most technical trails.

Geometry adjustment is possible, allowing riders to slacken the standard 64.5-degree head angle down to 62.5 degrees This effectively makes the Kenevo SL a dedicated downhill race bike in terms of geometry.

For the local market, Specialized has chosen to introduce the new Kenevo SL in the brand’s Expert specification grade. It retails for R175 000.
