  • Cannondale celebrates 50 years in cycling during 2021
  • And part of its awareness campaign has seen a group of emerging local riders – get on some awesome bikes

Trying to be a pro mountain biker during the pandemic has not been easy.

With a haphazard schedule of events, many aspiring competitive mountain bikers have had to forego their aspirations.

For those riders who begin their mountain biking journey from a disadvantaged position, it is even tougher. If not, nearly impossible.

The Fairtree racing team is an interesting Boland phenomenon. It all started back in 2008 and currently has 13 riders on its roster – with 12 males and one female. The age demographic is between 22- and 30, and each team member immerses themselves in the mountain bike lifestyle.

What makes the Fairtree team different, is how riders are developed to be more than pure racing snakes. They learn proper training and periodization from a qualified doctor and gym instructor.

Beyond the pure training and riding skills, the Fairtree members also attend bike maintenance tutorials from a qualified bike technician. And it’s the topic of bikes, that is where Fairtee have made a significant upgrade.

Global supply chains remain profoundly disrupted and with unprecedented demand for bicycles, many brands are struggling to supply customers. Not to mention emerging riders.

One of the world’s most renowned mountain bike racing bikes is Cannondale’s Scalpel, with its iconic Lefty single-sided fork. And these are the bikes that the Fairtree racing is team have now acquired.

As part of Cannondale’s 50th anniversary year, the brand has looked toward a more diverse product awareness audience. And this is where the Fairtree riders have benefitted.

The team bikes aren’t mid-grade builds, either. They are the best of the best: Cannondale’s Scalpel World Cup specification, with carbon-everything.

Fairtree Cannondale riders use the burgeoning Banhoek trail network for most of their training and know it exceptionally well. They are also expert guides for those corporate riders who want to explore the area’s amazing trail network, but aren’t always that confident about linking the terrific collection of trails.
