  • The postponed Cape Town Cycle Tour is now set to take place in October
  • A revised format has been announced to comply with Covid-19 regulations
  • In the event of cancellation of the event, entrants will be partly refunded, depending on the date of that announcement

The 43rd edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which was postponed from the traditional March date, is now scheduled to take place on 10 October, subject to all the necessary permissions being received.

To ensure compliance with national Covid-19 regulations, the event will see a revised format. This will significantly reduce the number of cyclists allowed to participate.

Cyclists will no longer gather on the Grand Parade and be sent off in start batches.

A much smaller field than usual

Participants will be allocated a time slot, within a four-hour period, during which they must roll across the start line, at which point their timing chip will activate their actual start time. Starting time slots will be determined by rider seeding, to ensure safety on the road.

The number of cyclists permitted to enter will be limited to those prescribed by national legislation at the time. Organisers expect this to be 50% of their normal field and will thus only be accepting 18 000 entries.

Water stations will no longer have cups and hydration will be dispensed directly into water bottles. A limited and strictly controlled registration and expo are being planned but there will be no goodie bag for this edition of the event.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour will be followed a week later by the start of the Absa Cape Epic on 17 October, so there should be plenty of local and international pros in town.

There will only be two racing batches, catering for the elite men and ladies racing groups. The men will start in town and elite ladies in Fish Hoek as has been the case the last few years. The total prize fund of R200 000 will be split equally between these two categories.

What if the event is cancelled?

Organisers of the Cape Town Cycle Tour have put in place a linear schedule refund policy.

If the event is cancelled between entry and 9 July 2021, 90% will be refunded. Between 10 July and 9 August, 70% will be refunded and between 10 August and 16 September, 50%. If organisers decide to cancel the Cycle Tour between 17 September and the day of the event, no refund will be given.

Entries for Pedal Power Association members will open on Monday, 26 April at 13:00. Thereafter general entries will open on Thursday 29 April at 13:00. Entries will close once the entry limit is reached and cost R595.
