  • Riding on a pump track is a great way to develop bike handling skills.
  • There is a world-class pump track facility located in the heart of Pretoria.
  • The Bike Zone at Eduplex consists of a pump track and mountain bike loop.

Hidden deep in the streets of one of Pretoria's oldest neighbourhoods, is a riding spot like few others in South Africa.

Despite being completed in 2016, the Queenwood facility remains undiscovered by many Pretoria locals.

The Bike Zone at Eduplex Sport features an impressive pump track and jump line. A mountain bike route has recently been added, too.

Perfectly shaped jumps

This asphalt pump track was designed and built by Velosolutions. The first of its kind to be constructed to international specification, in South Africa.

The all-weather asphalt track covers 2500 square metres. It has 211m of berms and whoops.

For more experienced riders, a separate jump line was built around 18 jumps, making it ideal for riders on BMX, DH, Enduro and XC bikes.

Adding more off-road riding

Staff at Eduplex Sport have been hard at work expanding the facility's appeal and recently extended the mountain bike trail to nearly 5km.

As proof of concept, the new trail has hosted six- and 24-hour events, which are set to become an annual fixture by adding a few other loops through the school premises.

Work is already underway in extending this route even further for bigger laps.

Mastering the flow

Pump tracks are the ideal place for youngsters to learn the finer nuances of bike handling.

The shape and flow force riders to hone their momentum, balance and speed, which is beneficial to all cycling disciplines.

The great thing about pump tracks is that they are accessible for all. Kids can roll the same track as professionals, designed to reward more experienced riders as their speed and skill increase.

Trails for all

Despite being built on the Eduplex school property, the tracks are not limited to school affiliates but open to the general public.

The venue offers bike hire, has a fully licensed restaurant and is ideal for kids parties.

Eduplex Sport is at 1260 Rist Street, Queenswood, Pretoria, with easy access from the nearby N1 highway. Entry fees are R75 for adults and R50 for kids on weekdays or R120 for adults and R75 for kids on weekends.
