- Sustainable packaging is a big part of creating a more environmentally sensitive supply chain.
- Mountain bikes need big boxes and lots of plastic inside to keep them safe during their delivery journey.
- But a Spanish mountain bike brand has designed its own bike box, which is 100% recyclable.
The mountain bike industry often has an uncomfortable relationship with sustainability.
Although riding bikes is terrifically mindful and
healthy for humans, the industry supply chain can be needlessly littered with
Mountain bike packaging is an issue. All those zip-ties keeping the frame and components securely positioned in a box. And the accompanying foam padding blocks, to prevent damage in transit. That’s a lot of single-use plastic and foam.
Smarter supply chain
Industrial designers addressed the issue by rethinking how
mountain bikes are packaged for transport, from their production facilities to
The Spanish mountain bike brand, Mondraker, has never lacked innovation, and the company now has a 100% recyclable mountain bike box.
Going green without damaging the machine
These new bike boxes don’t compromise on frame safety,
despite lacking internal zip-ties or foam padding. Mondraker’s packaging design
uses strategically shaped cardboard bracing to protect the frame, while
reusable Velcro-straps keep it in position.
Even cleverer are the organic seals, adhesives and branding. Mondraker’s new bike boxes are externally secured with tape made from rice. And the security seal is processed from potato pulp.
The rice and potato elements are an inspired application of those carbs that usually fuel mountain bikers for a ride, being repurposed to making more sustainable bike boxes.
Even the ink, is clean
Completing the Mondraker 100% recyclable bike box design is
its biodegradable ink, used for the external logos and shipping information.
Mondraker has also reduced the overall volume of its bike boxes to increase shipping efficiency, making it possible to get more of them into a standard container.
