What's the most expensive pair of shoes you own? Some formal leather lace-ups you never wear, just shy of R1200? Those trendy sneakers at R1500?

In the mountain bike shoe market, those are bargain prices for entry-level shoes. An average pair of mountain bike shoes price between R2000-R4000. If you want trick Boa-dials to fasten them, or a carbon-fibre sole for optimal power transfer, that pricing bandwidth escalates to the R6000-R8000 price range.

And don't expect them to last that long. Your favourite pair of sneakers might be a fashion and function accessory for many years, even a decade, but mountain bike shoes might not survive two winters of mud riding.
