  • Trail dogs remind all riders about the most important in mountain biking – having fun.
  • Although most mountain bikers think that younger dogs make the best buddies, the seniors can represent, too.
  • British rider, Ben Gerrish, has a special relationship with his trail dog, Luna

You have two tyre contact patches on a mountain bike. They have four paws. It’s never really, a fair contest.

Although not every trail network can accommodate dogs, those that do, spark the fantasy of enjoying a ride with your most loyal companion.

Ben Gerrish is an accomplished British mountain biker and outdoor lifestyle filmmaker. He has an array of bike skills that qualify him as an elite level trail rider, but his best rides, are with Luna.

Not every dog, can be a trail dog

Managing the introduction and progression of your trail dog isn’t easy. Start them too young, and you risk damaging their bones and joints.

Once a trail dog’s natural forest running instinct is triggered, you need to guard against them overexerting. Heat fatigue is a genuine danger with trail dogs.

Larger breeds can also stress their joints, especially when running on long, steep, technical trails. The smaller breeds possess ideal agility, making them excellent trail dog candidates.

A very fast old girl

Ben’s Luna is in her eleventh year, making this trail dog a very senior canine citizen. Despite her age, Luna’s trail athleticism remains deeply impressive.

Luna can clear technical climbing sections that Ben struggles with on his mountain bike.

And on the descents, she might not have the rolling advantage of Ben's Kona, with its 29er wheels, but that doesn’t stop Luna from being blindingly fast on the trail.
