  • Two South African riders entered the Tour de France Femmes.
  • And one of South Africa's best riders, is shaping strongly, at world's most prestigious women's race.
  • The inaugural Tour de France Femmes title races over eight days.

The first Tour de Frances Femmes started on Sunday, as the men's race finished. South Africa had two ladies registered in the peloton.

Covering 1033.6km, the Tour de France Femmes takes place across a balanced route over eight days of racing.

Multiple South African champion Ashleigh Moolman Pasio is riding for the SD Worx squad, hoping to contend for overall victory.

France inspired her to ride

For Moolman Pasio, the Tour de France inspired her to become a professional cyclist.

She was very successful in the virtual Tour de France hosted during the pandemic on Zwift. During that event, Moolman-Pasio won the Queen's stage on Zwift's virtual Mont Ventoux.

Moolman Pasio is no stranger to stage racing and finished second at last year's Ladies Giro.

Finishing a distinguished career in style

Tour de France Femmes came just in time for Moolman Pasio, who announced earlier this year that this would be her last year as a professional cyclist. The Stellenbosch native hopes to finish her career with a strong performance in France.

Moolman Pasio will start Friday's stage 6 in fifth position overall. Her team, the SD Worx squad, leads the general ranking.

Gaining experience

On the other end of the spectrum is the up-and-coming talent of 21-year old Frances Janse van Rensburg. She is the current SA women's road cycling championa and rides for Stade Rochelais Charente Maritime in the South African champion's jersey.

Janse van Rensburg is undoubtedly one of South Africa's best cycling talents, having spent last year in Europe at the World Cycling Centre in Switzerland. Her promise was recognised, and she signed to the French-based Stade Rochelais Charente Maritime squad.

Janse van Rensburg has been flourishing since moving to Europe, with finishes at events like Paris Roubaix. Unfortunately, she did not finish stage 3 of the Tour de Femmes, on Tuesday. But the experience gained will no doubt valuable, regardless.
