Entries are open for one of the North West’s best mountain bike races.

The Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic is a one-day event where riders can conquer a portion of the famous mountain range. Schedule for 4 June, it’s worth remembering the arm warmers for this one.

ATKV Buffelsport, as a race venue, allows plenty of activities to keep kids and families entertained when riders are out on the trails.

Event options are the full Magalies Monster MTB Classic marathon (65km), the half (35km) and a fun ride format of 16km. The latter is ideal for riders of modest fitness.

Where the 'Monster' name comes from

"For those mountain bikers looking for a fun day out, the fun ride has your name on it," says Michael Meyer, of Stillwater Sports. "It’s also the perfect event to enter with the kids. The event that generates the most excitement, the kids event, will be a fantastic source of entertainment for junior mountain bikers, parents, and spectators."

Event venue pleasantries aside, the Magalies Monster MTB Classic marathon remains a very challenging ride. By far one of the most testing one-day races for inland riders.

The 65km distance might not sound too severe, but it includes 1433m of climbing – including one particularly humbling climb, the aptly named Monster of Maanhaarrand pass. With a loose surface, this climb presents just after the second water point, at 20km, and takes riders to an absolute elevation of 1765m above sea level.

Entries fees for the Magalies Monster MTB Classic marathon start at R250 (for the 16km), increasing to R375 if you feel like riding the 35km and R475 for the full 65km test.

The 2.5km kids ride is R100.
