  • November means Origin of Trails. The Stellenbosch stage race, with a flood of singletrack riding.
  • Returning after a pandemic induced absence, the Origin of Trails formula hasn’t changed.
  • If you like riding a lot of singletrack, in the presence of some majestic Cape mountain peaks, this is the event for you.

A stacked fourth quarter events calendar has seen one of the best Cape Epic races in years.

The popular W2W is currently underway and November also sees the Origin of Trails MTB experience.

There is no arguing that Stellenbosch is South Africa’s cycling epicentre. The Boland town arguably has an unrivalled network of trails, with majestic mountain backdrops and vineyard vistas.

Mountain bikers can look forward to experiencing terrific trails at the eighth annual Origin of Trails, scheduled for the last weekend of November.

Trails. Trails. And more... Trails

An individual two-day stage race, the Origin of Trails opens a vast network of world-class and exclusive trails to participating riders.

"Affectionately dubbed the ‘MTB Party of the year’, mountain bikers will be treated to an on-route party from start to finish," says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Event.

"Both Days will start and finish at the Stellenbosch High School. Stage one of the Marathon will treat entrants to long, singletrack climbs, fun-filled technical descents and open road flat sections."

No Stellenbosch mountain biking discussion is complete, without mention of Jonkershoek. And Michael agrees.

"We’ve included the iconic Jonkershoek trails and yes Irish - the long and winding climb at the Jonkershoek entrance – will be in the mix."

"Your reward will be stunning views of the Jonkershoek Valley. Farms that will be traversed include Lanzerac, Rudera Wines, Old Nectar Gardens, Ride In and Rivierbosch.  Half Marathon riders will experience sections of this route before heading back to the finish."

Linking the valleys

The second day of Origin of Trails, will route through the burgeoning Banhoek mountain bike network

"Stage two starts with an undulating climb, followed by kilometers of smooth winding singletrack," continues Meyer. "The beautiful Banhoek Valley is iconic to this stage, while the Klein Bethlehem single tracks are out of this world. Look forward to experiencing the biggest berms you will find in the Stellenbosch area."

"Farms that will form part of this route includes DeMorgenzon, Bartinney Wines, Zeven Rivieren, Klein Bethlehem, Zorgvliet, Summercourt, Thelema and Tokara. Again the Half Marathon Route will incorporate sections of this route, riders are definitely in for a treat."

Late November never produces cool weather in the Boland. Origin of Trails organisers advise riders to carry additional water, although the route water tables will be adequately stocked.

Entry for the marathon event is R1600 and the milder half-marathon is R1400.
