  • One of the toughest mountain bike races, will return to KZN
  • It starts at midnight and gives you a full day, to ride a really long way, from mountains to the coast
  • Riders need to be confident of dealing with the Underberg cold and riding at night

Most South African mountain bikers are familiar with the multi-day stage race concept and Sani2c is one of the best known local events.

But what if you tried to do it all in only a day? That was the motivation behind Sani2c’s original nonstop events.

In the late 2000s, when mountain biking was popular and more given to hardcore endurance riding, the nonstop was a thing. Riders had only 24-hours to cover a lot of distance, starting at midnight.

Although the concept was sound, it was overtaken by the demand for three-stage racing and Sani2c organisers last held a nonstop event 15-years ago.

An old-school way of riding and racing

Disruptions to the stage racing calendar and altering demand have seen Sani2c reintroduce the nonstop for 2022.

It will start at the Sani pass and route to Scottburgh beach, covering 250km. In a day.

Riders will start at midnight, which means frigid KZN highlands temperature, before navigating their way to the coast. To ride it, you will need a support crew.

The Sani2c nonstop is much more demanding than any multi-day stage race. Riding those first few hours at night can be disorientating, although the significant improvement in LED mountain bike lights should make it less risky than in 2009, when the onestop was last held.

Fitness of the body and mind required

Beyond the pure endurance aspect of the event - 250km is a long day on the mountain bike – there will be an additional navigation challenge.

Sani2c nonstop organisers will be providing GPS guidance points, but riders won’t have the convenience of following dedicated visual route marking, as is the case at most mountain bike races.

The single-day endurance mountain bike format might appeal to dedicated solo riders, but to ride the Sani2c nonstop, you must be part of a team.

Scheduled for the first weekend of June 2022, the Sani2c nonstop prices at R8500 for a team of two riders, R11 400 for three and R14 300 if you ride in a group of four.
