Santa Cruz waited a long time, to introduce an e-bike.

The company Greg Minnaar races for has always been a custodian of purism in mountain biking. But market dynamics dictated that e-bikes were a segment that no longer could be ignored.

Reviving one of its established frame names, Santa Cruz’s e-bike model launched as the Heckler in 2020. It debuted with a mixed wheel size configuration (29er up front, with a 27.5” wheel at the rear), and Shimano mid-drive motor technology.

The Heckler 9 was added a few months ago, offering 29er wheels at both ends. But 1600 Heckler 9s, are now part of a Santa Cruz product recall.

Battery integrity

Engineers at Santa Cruz discovered that a safety latch, which secures the Heckler’s 720Wh downtube battery pack, can malfunction. The risk is having batteries fall out of the frame.

Santa Cruz identified a second issue with Heckler 9’s battery compartment: casing damage. The original Heckler 9 battery spring design can harm the lithium-ion battery pack’s structure.

As with most product recalls in mountain biking, the Santa Cruz situation is precautionary. It pertains all Heckler 9s sold from January to March.

No fires

What triggered the recall? Santa Cruz’s customer department received feedback from ten Heckler 9 owners, who experienced batteries dropping from frames. There were two other reports of battery housing wear, but no instances of fires or rider injuries.

If you ride a Heckler 9, your Santa Cruz dealer should be in contact to facilitate the necessary retrofit.
