New Zealanders do a lot more than play a good game of rugby.
Aotearoa is also an epicentre of global mountain biking. With its mountainous terrain and abundance of forests, New Zealand has produced many great riders.
Product innovation is impressive within New Zealand mountain biking. And some of that is directed at getting really small mountain bikers rolling along with their parents – even before they can pedal or steer for themselves.
Getting pre-school riders into 'big bike' off-road riding
Kids Ride Shotgun is a New Zealand child seat brand that has taken the annoyance out of riding with very young kids. Its frame-mounted child seat has ideal weight distribution and tutors tiny riders, as they view the trail and can observe parental riding inputs.
The brand has now released a pro version of its child seat, which doesn’t mount directly to the frame. This new configuration uses two clamps at either end of a mounting rail, attaching to the fork steerer and seat tube.
But what are the advantages of moving to the pro version, which doesn’t mount directly to your mountain bike’s top tube?
It saves your frame
The first issue this new pro version solves is contact wear.
Mountain bikers tend to overtighten components and over-torqued child seat mounting clamps can wear the finish on your bike.
Not a huge issue with an aluminium frame, but potentially very costly in the case of a carbon-fibre bike.
And it fits on an e-bike - properly
Tube shapes are the other issue. Newer mountain bike designs, and especially e-bikes, have oversized top tubes. And these are often somewhat rectangular in their profile, making a traditional round child seat clamp less than ideal.
Although Kids Ride Shotgun is not the first brand to produce a floating rail child seat mount, this new product has generous adjustability. It is easy to configure and optimizes your parent-and-child mountain bike riding experience.
Recommended retail for the Kids Ride Shotgun pro kiddie seat is R3700 and it is built for riders between two- and five years of age.
