Subscription boxes are a relatively new phenomenon whereby you can consistently get surprised by new stuff relating to your hobby.
Most common subscription boxes were developed in the comic book industry where avid readers and collectors would pay a monthly fee to get new comics, t-shirts hats and even collectables.
The key to its success is that it was always a surprise as to what you were going to end up with as nobody knew what the suppliers were sending you until the delivery van rang the doorbell.
Local company Munition has just started a bike box subscription service where they’ll deliver you a box of bike-specific stuff after three payments of R489. So, what do you get for your R1500?
Munition has developed a tier system where every box comes with at least a single high-value item. This can be bib shorts, glasses, shoes, jerseys, gloves, tyres saddles or glasses. These big-ticket items, can easily account for the whole three months spend on its own.
Included in the box as well are four other tiers of products, which have been grouped into biking specific names. So, along with the high-value item you get a two-to-three ‘domestique’ items such as inflation kits, cleaning kits, pumps, tubes, supplements or ‘raffle bag’ items that are random bits of gear to keep you going such as lubes, cleaners and nutrition.
The final item in the box is called the ‘no-bonk bonus’ and is a bit of a lucky dip that could be anything from nutrition to discounts on training plans, supplements or even race entries.
What if I don’t like my high-value item?
No need to worry, just before your box is about to hit the road, someone from Munition will get in touch with you and offer you a choice of high-value items that are options for that round of box deliveries.
So far Munition has sent out two rounds of boxes and is packaging its third round to send on their way. The first round contained the buyer’s choice of a jersey, gilet, base layer or trail shirt as the high-value or ‘podium product’.
The rest of the box contained Forza phone sleeve and pouch a ton of nutrition from Endurade and then an MTB specific gym workout and 15% voucher for RunHikeBike artwork.
This is merely a basic outline of what comes in a subscription bike box but the point is for each one to be a surprise.
