  • Action cameras are very useful in mountain biking.
  • They can help riders learn better technique, watching themselves ride, with a coach.
  • And who doesn’t like creating those home edits of their mountain hike adventures?

The compact action camera market has been very beneficial for mountain bikers.

Smaller and more powerful cameras,  have enabled mountain bikers to record themselves (and others) riding. And one of the best ways to see what you are doing wrong, is to watch yourself cornering or riding down technical trail features.

Small in size - big on image quality

Action cameras have also helped riders record new trails, which other riders can watch, before their first run. This helps to prepare riders for unexpected rock features, jumps or other technical obstacles.

One of the latest action cameras, is DJI’s Action 2. The drone manufacturer has created a potent action camera with low weight and compact dimensions.

At only 56g, the Action 2 is so light that you’ll hardly feel it mounted atop your helmet – or attached to a chest mount. It might be tiny, but there is a quality sensor inside, capable of recording your ride in 4K.

If you want to get creative with those slo-mo sequences, the Action 2 can run at 120fps and it also captures some pretty impressive still images, at 12MP of resolution.

Dealing with tricky lighting

A traditional weakness of action cameras for mountain biking, is how poorly they cope with rapidly changing light conditions. When riding in a forest, those light streaks through the canopy can play havoc with a digital camera’s colour balance and exposure latitude.

With the DJI Action 2, an intelligent colour temperature sensor helps achieve natural colour tone, when recording in challenging dappled light.

Battery endurance is competitive, at 160 minutes and the DJI Action 2 has 32GB of internal storage.

If you are riding alone and want to capture flyby footage, the Action 2 has delay timer functions.

The DJI Action 2 features Gorilla glass on its rear menu touchscreen, with haptic feedback, to make it easier for you to configure the camera, even with gloved hands.
