You rarely see a Commencal on South African trails, but the Andorran mountain bike brand has cachet beyond its sales volume.
Unlike most rival mountain bike brands, Commencal refuses to build carbon-fibre mountain bike frames, citing the lack of recyclability as an issue.
It has perfected the industrial design and engineer art of aluminium, in the mountain bike frame application, and over the last few years, Commencal downhill bikes have proven hugely successful, winning both the 2018 and 2019 overall UCI World Cup titles.
As with most other mountain bike companies, Commencal has also pivoted into the e-bike market, servicing the huge demand for battery-assisted bikes.
Japanese battery and drive tech
The Commencal Meta Power TR has been updated with Shimano’s latest EP8 mid-drive motor and 630Wh battery system. This gives it a lot more power and range, not to mention slicked drivetrain integration.
In an attempt to prove that its e-bike range is every bit as capable and agile when descending the most technical of trails, at speed, Commencal has produced a great mountain bike video, using some of Cape Town’s best trails.
South African downhill and freeriding talent, Theo Erlangsen, shows what the Meta Power TR is capable of with an adequately skilful rider at the helm. This Commencal e-bike has a 140mm rear shock, with 150mm of front suspension.
