  • Iconic supermodel Helena Christensen, with her mother Elsa, stylist and creative director Pernille Teisbaek, and singer-songwriter Iris Gold have come together with Pandora to share their personal experiences of becoming mothers.
  • W24 got an opportunity to talk all things motherhood with London-based singer and songwriter Iris Gold, who recently gave birth to a baby boy.

One of the most incredible and fascinating makings of a woman is the ability to give life. Once every year, we celebrate this gift - not only expressing gratitude to the ones who gave birth to us, but also to mother figures who personify the expression "it takes a village to raise a child".

And this Mother’s Day, jewellery brand, Pandora, is sharing stories and insights about motherhood and how motherly love empowers women today. Accompanying these stories is a global survey of 9 000 women exploring motherhood in today’s society.

A sentiment echoed throughout the findings of the survey is that love is the most powerful thing about motherhood. Additionally, over a third (38 percent) of respondents said that it is the love they have for their child that makes them feel most empowered. And when asked how motherhood makes them feel, mothers across the world chose happiness (38 percent), pride (34 percent) and loved (30 percent) as their top responses.

Self-love and acceptance are said to be key traits of motherhood, and when asked how they define these terms, almost two-thirds of mothers (63 percent) chose "accepting that there’s no such thing as a perfect mother", while 45 percent answered that they don’t let other people’s judgement negatively affect them.

One such mom is singer and songwriter Iris Gold, who expresses that "the most powerful thing about becoming a mother is not caring so much about what other people think. I wish I had the confidence to feel that way before I had my son".

This is the star's first Mother's Day, and to mark this moment, W24 got an opportunity to talk all things motherhood with the new mom:

We’re aware that pregnancy isn’t always easy on everyone, but what was the best part of pregnancy for you?

I loooved the way my body looked. I felt like I looked like a goddess with my huge round belly. I was on my European tour, 17 cities, while I was 6-7 months pregnant and I performed in wonderful catsuits every night to really show off my bump.

It was dope and it really had an effect especially on the female audience members, looking at me like some kind of Mother Earth supreme being.

What did you look forward to the most about motherhood?

Meeting him and seeing what kind of personality he had. I was excited to see my own reaction when holding him in my arms for the first time, because you hear so much about this instant love and bond. Snuggling him and holding him close to me, for sure.

What does being a mother mean to you now that you have a baby?

It is the most amazing, exhausting, beautiful, nerve-wracking and everything in between experience. It’s like all your feelings get illuminated. It has certainly made me stronger and more fragile because I have more to lose. Stronger because now I know what complete and utter, unconditional love feels like.

What’s your one character trait you wish for your child to grow up and embody directly from you?

I hope he turns out as charming as me, haha! I would love him to be as strong-willed as me, that he is a go-getter that doesn’t give up when meeting obstacles.

Which qualities and character traits did you get from your own mom and/or mother figures?

My grandmother who is like a mum to me, instilled in me that its good to be a strong woman. It doesn’t make you bossy or a diva. Have an opinion and feel comfortable to speak out on matters of the heart.

What’s your favourite memory of Granny Judith?

It was when I would visit her in London and in the morning, she would bring me breakfast in bed. On a little tray with an egg and solider toast, a little Jaffa Cake and a cup of tea. The whole thing made me feel so loved and special.

Growing up – or even now in adulthood - what was your best Mother’s Day memory?

I haven’t had one yet, but I hope my boyfriend reads this and makes an extra effort to make me feel extra special, haha!

What’s your greatest wish for your child?

That he is happy, comfortable, feels loved and secure. I grew up around Christiania and other hippie communions. It wasn’t amazing as a kid, as often the grownups acted like children and it forced me to grow up too fast, I think. I craved stability and someone reliable growing up. I really want my son to always feel like he can count on me.

And your wish for fellow mothers entering a new journey of motherhood?

That they remember to enjoy it as much as possible and not to judge themselves too hard. Do their best and try to laugh a lot. We as humans in general can be so hard on ourselves.

Meditation for me is super important, it gives me perspective and helps me to remember to be thankful and tell myself I’m doing the best I can. It helps give me a little zen during the day, so I don’t get overwhelmed as easily.

How do you feel motherhood has affected you creatively for the new album you’re currently working on?

I must say, becoming a mother has given me so much creative energy. It's really cool even though I’m exhausted because of breastfeeding and getting up during the night.

It may be because I have less time for studio work now, so when I am there, I’m fully there and present in what I’m doing. No time for slacking because I’ve got to get back.
