The rape and subsequent death of 23 year old Indian student, Jyoti Singh, sparked world-wide outrage and debate around women’s rights.
Indian women were thrown into the fore of the media frenzy and Manisha Mohan was one of these women.
Manisha, an engineering student from the Indian city of Chennai, found a way to use her technical expertise to develop a new bra; designed to deliver a 3800kv electric shock to any would-be rapist.
Designed together with fellow students Niladhri Basu Bal and Rimpi Tripathi the bra was created to protect all women living in fear of succumbing to the same fate as Jyoti and the many women that came before her.
The anti-rape lingerie is not only able to help women fight back, but it is enabled with technology that allows the wearer to send an SMS to a relative or friend and to the local police station, with the GPS coordinates of the victim's location.
Manisha is just one of many women looking for ways to combat the molestation and rape crimes that make life for women in Delhi so difficult.
We support this initiative completely and hope it is something we’ll see introduced in South Africa very soon!
