Chad Le Clos turns 21!

The swimmer was surprised with an 18-carat yellow and white gold ring, valued at R50, 000 and set with 101 round diamonds – 100 for show and one for good luck.

The lavish birthday present features the five interlocking rings of the Olympic Games and was a present from his father, Bert, his cousin, Andrey Riethoven and designer goldsmith David Bachelor.

According to IOL news Bert wanted the ring to be a present for his son’s 21st saying; “that’s when you get something special. Chad’s reaction was unbelievable when he saw the ring. He was over the moon; it really surpassed his expectations.”

Chad was given the ring at a restaurant in uMhlanga on Friday night and spent his birthday weekend raising awareness for the 2013 World Transplant Summer Games.

The event takes place in Durban from the 28th of July to the 4th of August and Chad is one of several celebrity ambassadors promoting the games.

Women24 spoke exclusively to World Transplant athlete, and previous gold-medallist Cath De Beer, who is hoping for another medal for her performance on the squash court.

Cath told Women24 that Chad was enthusiastic and supportive! “He even took the time to take part in an interview and photo shoot on his 21st Birthday! He'll be a huge inspiration not only to the swimmers but to all the other athletes competing in the games.”
