Jaundice

A condition caused by elevated levels of bilirubin, a substance made from the breakdown of old red blood cells which is normally removed by the liver.

Symptoms:

  • Flu-like symptoms of headache, fever and general weakness.
  • Nausea and vomiting and no appetite.
  • Tender upper right abdomen where the infected liver is located.
  • Later, your child may have dark urine and pale faeces, and the skin and the whites of her eyes may seem yellowish.

Seriousness:

  • Take your child to see a doctor within 24 hours.

Treatment:

  • If your child vomits, give her small amounts of rehydrating fluid and water throughout the day.
  • Let her lie down if she feels ill. Boil all food utensils and wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the virus from spreading to other family members.
  • It will take your child two to six weeks to recover enough to return to school.
