The awkward sex talk

accreditation
The dreaded sex talk is awkward - let's just face it. It's not an easy topic to bring up or to discuss without sounding like the Judgemental Parent. But it's necessary.

A topic that's also important to talk about - which goes hand-in-hand with the sex talk - is that of contraception. And boy, it's just as awkward! Explaining how to put on a condom to your adolescent son will never be a fun way to spend the afternoon! If you need some advice, try these tips.

We asked our Facebook fans who they had the big "sex chat" with their kids.

Here are their answers:

I'm waiting till she is 40. - Sharlene Collins

Still dread the day I'll have to do that. I'm afraid of being embarrassed. - Lerato Ntuli Ratoo

My daughter is 8 years old and she knows about good touch, bad touch. She knows what sex is and she knows how babies are made. She also knows what AIDS is. I believe that we must be open with our kids and always truthful. - Margo Prowse

When my daughter had her first menstruation period, I decided to give an open talk about sex. The DOs & DON'Ts. It's difficult but you have to think of what's best for their future - you have to do something before it's too late. We had a nice time talking about it, just the right time in the right place. - Judilim Moncada Armbruster

She is only 6 but she knows what is right and wrong affection. The rest we will explain later. - Marianne Jacobs

You see, it's not easy for anyone. You could leave it up to the school to teach your kids. Or even ask their favourite aunt or uncle to do the dirty task of explaining.
