Inspired by male celebs who have taken to the new trend of taking on their wives last name, we ask if it is ok for us average folk to do the same?
Those for it:
Senny: Yeah, I would, it is about time we share ownership of both cultures with men.
Carmia: Yes, of course - why not?!
Kelebogile: There's nothing wrong with this, only African man will have a problem with it because they will argue that the reason they are marrying you is so you can take their surname and not the other way around. They will also say that if in that case (when they actualy do take our last names), we must also pay half the dowry owed to our families, only then will they ‘allow’ it. #smh
Those against it:
Janet: Shameful that men taking women's last names even makes the news. Is this what society has come to?
Refiloe: NO!
Mukondeleli: No way what for?
Mosa: No, that's just ridiculous
Teresa: No....
Those who love the hyphen!
Zayaan: I think it's cool that they did (celebs). Legally I didn't change my surname, and rather added my husband's to my own (socially) because by blood I will always be my father's child.
Although I don't understand why it would be ridiculous for a husband to take his wife's surname but it's not ridiculous for a wife to take her husband's? That's a bit hypocritical, I think.
Michèlle: My husband and I combined our surnames. He is also deBeer-Pieterse.
Those with stories to tell...
Melanie-ann: My brother-in-law became a Diesel when he married my sister. No kidding!
Thembeka: No we are fighting already about the double barrel surname i'm using.
