Lady Gaga's performance in the much anticipated House of Gucci film comes from within.

The star channelled pain from being raped into her performance and other previous traumatic experiences in her life.

In the new film, she portrays Patrizia Reggiani, who ordered a hit on fashion heir ex-husband Maurizio Gucci. For this role, she immersed herself in the worst experiences in her life to give the character the right voice.

The 35-year-old shared earlier in the year that she had been sexually assaulted by a music producer when she was 19.

"I took the pain I felt from being attacked when I was a young girl, from the feeling left behind by people I love, from feeling trapped that I can't go into the world I love. I took the pain and gave it to her," the Bad Romance singer says.

Film director Sir Ridley asked her to tone down the intensity.

"I don't want you traumatising yourself. Leave it here and don't this to yourself anymore," the director told her.

Lady Gaga pushed herself so much in the nine months working on the film that she was often physically ill.

"You wake up, and you throw up, you go to set, you throw up again," she says.

The plot covers three decades of Patrizia's life, from her marriage to Maurizio walking out on her in 1985 and her organising a hit ten years after that.

"Me passing as a 22 or 25-year-old is ridiculous, but thank you, Ridley, for believing in me in that way," Lady Gaga says.
