Most recently and notably, the Duchess and Duke of Sussex stepped back from royal duties to spend their time between the UK and North America. 

In a bid to become "financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," according to the couple's statement, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry retained their HRH stylings but are not permitted to use them.

Possibly the greatest 73-year marriage story stemmed from Prince Phillip renouncing his claim to not one but two thrones in order to marry the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Now the queen, this royal couple stood the test of time until the Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April 2021.

According to Hello Magazine, perhaps the most famous royal who abdicated the throne after less than a year on it is King Edward VIII who left London to marry Wallis Simpson. 

Releasing this statement at the time, he said, "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love."
