According to Hello Magazine, perhaps the most famous royal who abdicated the throne after less than a year on it is King Edward VIII who left London to marry Wallis Simpson.
Releasing this statement at the time, he said, "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love."
