Zimbabwean immigrants who are in South Africa on a visa known as a Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP), have been given until 31 December 2022 to apply for a new visa to legalise their stay.
The Department of Home Affairs implemented the ZEP in 2017 for undocumented Zimbabweans in South Africa, and the permit was valid for four years. On 29 November 2021, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed a Cabinet decision to issue a directive that further extensions would not be given for the ZEP.
