South Africa's favourite lockdown comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout has launched a new podcast in which he interviews local celebrities and their mothers.
By inviting celebrities and their mothers to sit in front of the mic, Bezuidenhout puts his own unique spin on a genre that has become increasingly popular in the last decade: The celebrity podcast.
"In fact," he continues, "the guest of honour is always the moms. The celebrities are really only there to fact-check."
In the first episode of Your Mom with Schalk, released Monday, Bezuidenhout sits down with Jack Parow and his mom, Tannie Ronelle. Listeners will hear first-hand what Tannie Ronelle thinks about the life of her world-famous rapper son.
Spoiler alert! She is an open-minded woman, and through her stories about raising the boy who would become Jack Parow, it becomes clear that both the rapper and all his fans owe Tannie Ronelle a great deal.
When the topic of swearing comes up, Tannie Ronelle says, "I hardly hear it," before sharing her "favourite" bad words.
She adds, "He got that from me, so how can I tell him not to say it."
When asked if there is one thing that her son does that she doesn't like or approve of, Tannie Ronelle reveals, "Tattoos."
"You know, my children. Dit is nou regtig die einde (That is really the end)," she says, adding, "You know what. If he is a grandfather, look what he looks like."
"I'm going to look great. I'm going to look entertaining," Jack Parow chirps.
Elsewhere in the podcast, Jack Parow opens up about experimenting with psychedelic drugs, specifically mushrooms.
In 2021, Jack Parow, real name Zander Tyler, went to the Knysna Forest to fight his personal demons. There he spent time at a retreat that offers psychedelic microdosing as a form of therapy in a controlled environment.
Upon his return, the rapper celebrated his 40th birthday by announcing his new album – Die Evangelie van Goeie Tye (The Gospel of Good Times). He has since released a new single on the 22nd of every month, leading up to the full-length album's release on 22 February 2023.
