The historical epic directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood is inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Davis was awarded CinemaCon's inaugural trailblazer prize last month

During her acceptance speech, she called the movie, which she also produced, her 'magnum opus' (great work), reports AFP.

"I wanted to be a producer who championed those stories with people with a history that looked like me," she said.
