"I've never wanted to be a lady who lunches; I've always wanted to be a woman who works. And this type of work is what feeds my soul," Meghan Markle wrote for Elle in 2016, as she spoke candidly about her purpose in life and how, with fame, came a sense of responsibility to do more.

Since then, she's gone on to marry Prince Harry, become a working member of the royal family, and changed so many lives.

Of course, it's been a rocky start to the year for Meghan, having made the decision along with Prince Harry to step down from the royal family, all the while continuing her legal battle with the Mail on Sunday and the Mail Online. But she seems steadfast as ever in her mission to forge her own path, attending various engagements in the past few weeks.

And despite her exit from the royal firm, the queen, William and Kate, as well as Clarence House, reached out on social media to wish Meghan a happy birthday on Tuesday.

With Meghan turning 39 on 4 August, we're celebrating by looking at all the reasons we love the Duchess of Sussex, with 10 times she was unapologetically herself and a total badass! Scroll up.
