1. Coming 2 America
In the sequel to the popular 1988 film, everyone returns to Zamunda for the crowning of King Akeem (Eddie Murphy). Akeem learns that he has a son in New York City so he and his confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) go back to the USA to track him down. The film also stars South African actress, Nomzamo Mbatha as Mirembe, Prince Lavelle’s love interest.
2. The Tomorrow War
This high-stakes action movie stars Chris Pratt and tells the story of a group of time travellers arriving from 2051 to warn inhabitants that in the future mankind is losing a war against aliens. Dan Forrester (Pratt), a former soldier and biology teacher, gets drafted to fight in the war in the future and tries to discover the cause behind the destruction.
3. The Grand Tour
Bringing together the original Top Gear hosts - Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, the first three series of the show mirrored the format of Top Gear with car reviews, timed races and celebrity guests. Series 4 sees the hosts travelling to foreign locations with a car of their choice and experiencing the culture of the different locales.
4. The Underground Railroad
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, The Underground Railroad tells the fictional story of slaves attempting to escape slavery in the United States. Using magical realism, the story turns the Underground Railroad into an actual railroad with a train that takes people from one area of the country to another. The series is created and directed by Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins and stars South African actress Thuso Mbedu in the lead role of Cora.
5. Without Remorse
This action film stars Michael B. Jordan as an elite Navy SEAL who while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife discovers a plot to start a war between the United States and Russia.
6. Clarkson’s Farm
Follow motoring legend, Jeremy Clarkson, as he tries to run a farm in the countryside. While Clarkson has zero farming experience and with it being in the middle of a pandemic, it proves to be a hilarious undertaking.
7. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
One of the most prolific films of the last year, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was nominated for two Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Maria Bakalova. This comedy mockumentary follows Borat’s visit of America in 2020 with commentary on the political system, the reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as misogyny, abortion and parenting.
8. The Boys
Receiving an Emmy nomination for Best Drama at the 2021 awards, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes are seen as heroes and gods, and their powers go unchecked. So a group of non-powered humans called The Boys try to expose the powers behind the superheroes and the corruption surrounding it.
9. Bliss
Starring Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek, this fantasy film tells the story of an unfulfilled man and a mysterious woman who believe they are living in a simulated reality. But what happens when they can no longer tell the difference between their ‘Bliss’ world and the ‘ugly reality’? How do they know which one is real?
10. Savage x Fenty Volume 3
This year’s iteration of the extremely popular fashion show by Rihanna’s clothing label Savage Fenty, the new collection had a range of models from Vanessa Hudgens to Alek Wek to Cindy Crawford, as well as Namibian model Behati Prinsloo and South African actress Thuso Mbedu.
