The Emmy-nominated actor played the matriarch for six seasons in the musical drama Empire.
According to Variety the What Men Want actor is developing a spinoff series centred on Cookie which is part of a two-year first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
The series, which will be co-written by Danny Strong (Empire), Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence, will reportedly follow Cookie as she moves to L.A. and potentially feature some of her other family members.
Empire - which ended in April - was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Production was shut down in the middle of filming the penultimate episode.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 49-year-old said: "As an artist, to not be able to finish something that you started, that hurts me. I feel incomplete. I don't ever start something and don't complete it."
According to Deadline, about the deal with Fox Taraji said: "Art can change perception, and I plan to develop projects that can help further the conversation.
"I also aim to help cultivate and establish new young talent and their stories because they are our future and deserve a voice and a platform to be heard. I'm so excited to have 20th, led by the talented Carolyn Cassidy, support me in this new endeavour!"
