Trevor Noah's final night as host of The Daily Show was an emotional one, to say the least.

The South African comedian took over the reins from Jon Stewart in 2015, and, during his seven-year tenure as host of the political satire series, has offered important takes on issues in the US – and the world.

On Thursday night, Noah sat behind the desk for the final time, welcoming US comedian Neal Brennan as his final guest.

In front of a packed live audience and thousands of viewers at home, Noah said his final goodbye thanking fans who supported him and the Black women who shaped his life.

"Honestly, most importantly, I'm grateful to you," Noah says to an applauding crowd.

"I remember when we started the show, we couldn't get enough people to fill an audience. And then I look at this now. I don't take it for granted. Ever. Every seat that has ever been filled to watch something that I'm doing, I always appreciate because I know the empty seat that sits behind it."

Noah continued to thank the "people who watch, the people who share the clips, [and] everyone who's had an opinion".

He even thanked the haters: "Even if it's a critique. It doesn't have to be praise... I want to say I appreciate those people. Even the people who hate-watched we still got the ratings. Thank you."

Noah's message took an emotional turn as he then shared a "special shout out to Black women".

"I've often been credited with having these grand ideas, and I'm like, 'Who do you think teaches me? Who do you think has shaped me, nourished me, informed me?'" Noah says, listing his mother, grandmother and aunts in addition to Black women in America.

"I always tell people, 'If you truly want to learn about America, talk to Black women.' Because unlike everybody else, Black women cannot afford to fuck around and find out. Black people understand how hard it is when things go bad – especially in America, but in any place where Black people exist, whether it's Brazil or South Africa – wherever it is when things go bad Black people know that it gets worse for them. But Black women, in particular, they know what shit is."

Noah continued to thank all the Black women who have taught him, including his family, friends and colleagues: "They're a lot of the reason I'm here, so I am grateful to them."

Noah concluded his message, saying, "I'm grateful to every single one of you, this has been an honour. Thank you."
