The Last Gift of the Master Artists is a reworking of Ben Okri’s 2007 novel, Starbook. His main aim, he writes in the introduction, was to "imagine the time before the lives of Africans changed forever, just before the Atlantic slave trade", and he changed the novel to make it "simpler", to strengthen the political dimensions of the novel, to make them more obvious.
