When you are the reigning Olympic mountain bike champion and a Tour de France stage winner, your cycling talent is boundless. And problematic for team sponsors.
Tom Pidcock is the most exciting rider of his generation. The 23-year-old English rider has immense bike skills off-road and an ability to power along in the peloton on a road bike. But for the last few seasons, his ability to race on-and-off-road has created a problem for Pidcock's team.
Racing for the world’s best-funded team has many advantages, but when your bike sponsor doesn’t make a mountain bike, that creates an issue. And this is exactly what Pidcock, and his INEOS Grenadiers team, have had to manage: allowing Pidcock to race mountain bike events on a rival frame brand with tacit approval.
