The Ford Ranger FX4 double cab came to market earlier in 2021, with a 4x4 model joining the Wheels24 test garage on an extended test in July. The bakkie is not unfamiliar to local fans, having been introduced in 2017. For Ford South Africa, the FX4 is one of the final special edition models to come off the current Ranger before an all-new model is introduced in 2022.
The Ranger FX4 slots in between the XLT and Wildtrak models in Ford's Ranger hierarchy, but adopts the single-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine with 132kW and 420Nm on offer.
The bakkie features leather-covered seats, cruise control, a 12-volt power socket in the loading area, and FordPass Connect. The latter is Ford's newest app that owners can use to command several vehicle functions, including starting it remotely and scheduling a service.

Neale Hill, MD of Ford South Africa, said of the FX4: "Following the remarkable success of the Ford Ranger Thunder, it's clear that there is great demand among South African buyers for exclusive, value-added derivatives that offer a premium level of style and features, particularly in the important and rapidly growing leisure-oriented pickup segment. The FX4 broadens our Ranger line-up (and) offers a distinctive new model for discerning, lifestyle-oriented customers."
The Ford Ranger is produced in Silverton, Pretoria, for both the local and export market. The FX4 4x4 retails for R704 500, while the FX4 4x2 is priced at R634 200.
