The local motor industry is abuzz with news that Great Wall Motors will be bringing a new double-cab bakkie to South Africa.

The P Series is expected to make its South African debut in the second half of 2020 and on paper, at least, it looks to be a rival of sorts to the market leaders: the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Taking on its rivals

If the P Series is to take on these established rivals, there are numerous aspects it needs to address; this ranges from price to build quality and overall driving experience.

Though we have to wait until the local launch before we can truly judge the bakkie, there are enough talking points that could, possibly, give the Hilux and Ranger a few sleepless nights.

A turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine is the only option available. The 140kW and 360Nm it produces is channeled to all four tyres via an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
