Ford South Africa is on the 'special edition' offensive in 2021 with a raft of unique bakkies. So far, the automaker has launched bakkies like the Ranger FX4 and Ranger Stormtrak and will continue the trend with another one: the Ranger Raptor Special Edition.

Following Ford SA's announcement that this unique Raptor will debut in the country, the automaker has released official pricing for the bakkie on its website. Boasting a four-year or 120 000km warranty and a six-year or 90 000km service plan, the bakkie is priced at R965 300. Two models now comprise the Ranger Raptor line-up, with the 'standard' bakkie selling for R920 300.

The Ranger Raptor was launched in the South African market in 2019 and has become one of the most sought-after bakkies in the country. As with the rest of the Ranger line-up, the bakkie is produced in South Africa for the local and export markets.

About the Ranger Raptor Special Edition

The new bakkie adds a bit more to the package to enhance the 'special edition' appeal. As such, it features integrated sports hoops, a lockable Mountain Top black roller shutter, and new decals. Inside, the cabin features red stitching on the steering wheel, instrument panel, and the inside or the doors. Leather seats are standard, with the front units featuring heaters.

The instrument panel takes on a Special Edition-only Raceway Grey colour scheme for added exclusivity.

Doreen Mashinini, General Manager for Marketing at Ford South Africa, said: "The new Ranger Raptor Special Edition adds even more dramatic style to this trend-setting model which remains unequalled in the popular bakkie segment two and a half years after it was launched in South Africa. The unique exterior enhancements and cabin updates make our off-road performance bakkie even more distinctive and desirable, while the fitment of the roller shutter as standard significantly enhances practicality and security for our customers."

The Ranger Raptor Special Edition is available in four colours: Sea Grey, Frozen White, Blue Lightning, and Agate Black.

Ranger Raptor's performance credentials

The Ranger Raptor Special Edition continues with the same exclusivity the standard bakkie is endowed with. This includes the 2.5-inch FOX Racing shocks that allow for 30% more wheel travel, 33-inch all-terrain tyres, and the reengineered ladder-frame chassis that's been strengthened with high-density low alloy (HSLA) steel.

As is common knowledge, the Ranger Raptor has been designed for high-speed off-road driving - conditions and regulations permitting. The bakkie's track is 150mm wider, and the ground clearance 51mm higher than that of the standard Ranger bakkie. The bakkie is powered by Ford's 157kW and 500Nm bi-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine mated with the automaker's 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Ranger Raptor is fitted with Ford's Terrain Management System, gifting the bakkie with a choice of driving modes, including Baja Mode.
