Volkswagen's fifth-generation Caddy will launch in South Africa in November 2021. The automaker will be expanding its commercial vehicle portfolio with the most popular vehicle in the A City Van segment. It will look to continue the sales success of the generations preceding the upcoming one.
According to Volkswagen, the Caddy has sold 35 617 units to date since debuting in SA in 1992, with the current generation sitting on a sales figure of 1 730 units to date. Having been on sale globally since 1979, more than 3.0 million units have found owners over the last 42 years.
Volkswagen says the new Caddy will be launched with a new naming convention: Caddy, Caddy Maxi, Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo.
Familiar underpinnings
Volkswagen says that the new Caddy will continue to be built on its trusted MQB platform that underpins many vehicles in the Volkswagen Group, including the new Golf 8 and Audi A3. This means that the automaker could equip the car with high-end technologies.
The vehicle can be had in both long- and short wheelbase options, but an option now is the panoramic glass roof. Five seats are standard, with seven available as an option. The Caddy Maxi - a long-wheelbase derivative - comes standard with seven seats.
The Caddy Kombi and Maxi Kombi will be positioned as the people carriers of the range and will take on a strong leisure approach. Features on the Caddy Kombi include black coated bumpers, steel wheels, H7 Halogen headlights and an electronic brake with auto-hold. Optional features include a rear-view camera, LED headlights, App-Connect, multi-function steering wheel, 16-inch Wien alloy wheels, tow bar (fixed or removable), rear wing doors, front fog lamps with cornering lights, and cruise control.
The short wheelbase is 2.755mm in length and has a load compartment volume of 3.1m3. The Caddy Maxi Cargo with a long wheelbase of 2.970mm allows a load compartment volume of 3.7m3.
Engine line-up
A four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine will power the Caddy, Caddy Kombi (SWB) and Caddy Cargo (SWB) derivatives. It produces 81kW and 152Nm and is mated with a six-speed manual transmission.
Powering Caddy, Caddy Maxi (LWB), Caddy Kombi (SWB), Caddy Maxi Kombi (LWB), Caddy Cargo (SWB), and Caddy Maxi Cargo (LWB) is a turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine. This unit offers 81kW and 300Nm. Fitted with the same gearbox as its petrol counterpart, Volkswagen claims a 5.5-litres/100km fuel return.
The passenger version Caddy and Caddy Maxi come standard with a three-year or 120 000km warranty, while the Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo come standard with a two-year or unlimited km warranty. The entire Caddy range also comes standard with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty.
Pricing for the new Caddy range will be announced closer to the launch date.
