Toyota has ditched the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine fitted to it Land Cruiser Prado and has replaced it with the smaller capacity 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine. The diesel-powered models now have 150kW and 500Nm courtesy of the engine first seen in the latest Hilux.
Toyota has also fitted the Prado with an updated infotainment system.
There are three models featuring the new engine, a TX, VX and VX-L with prices starting at R939 900 and topping off at R1 105 800 for the flagship model
Much-needed power hike
The Prado benefits from the latest 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine first seen in the latest Hilux. It features a power hike of 20kW of power and 50Nm of torque for a maxium output of 150kW and 500Nm, that is now mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The company says the Prado's overlanding and towing credentials benefit from the higher-performance engine that now delivers its maximum power at 3400 r/min and the 500Nm over a wider 1600-2800 r/min band.
The latest generation 2.8 GD-6 engine (as debuted in the updated Hilux) has received a raft of upgrades including a new ball-bearing turbocharger with a larger turbine and impeller, and improved engine rigidity and cooling.

Toyota quotes the fuel capacity at 150 litres with an 87-litre main tank and 63-litre sub tank. The maximum braked towing capacity is increased to 3000kg on 2.8-litre models.
A new-generation multimedia system is fitted across the range, which now incorporates a (slightly) larger 22cm touchscreen display , improved voice recognition tech and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
