• The second-hand vehicle market accounts for around 65% of all cars sold locally.

• Data from the Autotrader report shows the Ford Ranger generated 8.3-million searches over a 12-month period.

• The Ranger is the best-selling used vehicle in the country with the brand's EcoSport and Fiesta also in the top 10.

We know South Africans love bakkies, that's clear from the new car sales data where the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux consistently rank in the top five vehicles sold.

However the lockdown has negatively affected consumers and many people are searching for a car in the used car market.

A recent annual car industry report conducted by AutoTrader shows that the Ford Range is the top-selling used vehicle model overall - and the fifth most searched vehicle for the period July 2019 to June 2020.

The Ranger's dominance is clear to see from the data and Silverton-made bakkie contributed 4.7% of all used cars sold and generated 8.3-million searches over the 12-month period.

The data gleaned from the 2020 AutoTrader Car Industry Report provides insight into which makes, models and – for the first time in South Africa – which variants (including trim levels) are important to car-buying consumers.

2.2TDCI DC proves popular

"The top-selling used Ranger derivative is the 2.2TDCi Double Cab Hi-Rider XL; it is the most popular Ranger by far. It retails for an average selling price of R260 673, the average mileage is 90 596 km and the average year of registration is 2015. The Ranger is especially popular in Gauteng, with that province representing 55% of total Ranger sales while the double cab is the most popular body type, accounting for 68,86% of sales," reveals George Mienie, AutoTrader CEO.

Other Ford products in the top 10 used car sales include the EcoSport and Fiesta. The former is the only compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the top 10.

"The used car market accounts for approximately two-thirds of all vehicles sold in South Africa, making it an exceptionally important retail segment for customers and dealers alike," says Eben Swart, Ford Approved manager at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA).

Comparatively, in June 2020 there 174 more sales through the Ford dealership network on used cars versus June 2019.
