Volkswagen South Africa launched the new Golf GTI TCR in South Africa a couple of months back. The car is the final hoorah for the current Golf 7.5 GTI before an all-new model arrives in 2021. With plenty of hype and excitement around the TCR, the car finally made its debut and buyers snatched them up in the blink of an eye.

Only 300 units were allocated for the South African market, and more than 50% of it were sold within the first month or so. Massive success for Volkswagen SA, then, as another of its products managed to gift the marketing team another feather in their cap. Honestly, this comes as little surprise, because the GTI TCR is a strong product built on a reliable chassis and framework.

Sadly, not everyone will be able to afford the TCR and would they have to wait for a model to become available on the used-car market, which is exactly what we found on the AutoTrader website!

Holding its value

If you thought you'd receive a massive discount on the new GTI TCR's sticker price, you'd be sorely mistaken. New, the TCR will set you back R675 700, but there is a snag: this car is a collector's item, so its value is likely to drop by a minimal margin before increasing again.

We're also aware of two models that have been written off so there are only 298 models left in South Africa.

Browse through the GTI TCR listings here.

The 'cheapest' TCR we found on AutoTrader retails for R658 800, and it has 5500km on the odometer. This specific model is decked in Tornado Red, one of three colours available on the TCR (Pure While and Pure Grey are the other two colours). Another model, in Pure White, only has 45km on the clock but has a sticker price of R664 995. The most expensive TCR on the AutoTrader listings page retails for R749 995 and has 200km on the clock. This one is decked in Pure Grey.

Note: all three colour options are standard on the GTI TCR.

The Golf GTI TCR has become an instant classic in South Africa, and it will be a tough find to acquire one without breaking the bank. Our opinion is that the GTI, in general, is a strong brand and will show a return on investment down the line. If the TCR is not proof of that, then we don't know what is.
