  • They found that the human clitoris contains 10,281 nerve fibres on average, which exceeds a previous estimate based on a study in cows.
  • The number of nerve fibres within the human clitoris has never been officially quantified.

Researchers have revealed a new study about the pleasure-producing sexual organ, the clitoris.

A study led by the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) examined tissue samples of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris to quantify the number of nerve fibres innervating the human clitoris.

They found that the human clitoris contains 10,281 nerve fibres on average, which exceeds a previous estimate based on a study in cows. The number of nerve fibres within the human clitoris has never been officially quantified. The often-cited claim is that the clitoris has "8,000 nerve endings," but this figure originates from a bovine study mentioned in a book titled The Clitoris, which appeared in 1976.

The clitoris is likened to the penis as it carries the same importance in sexual functioning. It originates from the same mass of tissue in the embryo that gives rise to the penis. However, researchers say it is less widely studied than its male counterpart.

Researchers believe that establishing the number of fibres in the dorsal clitoral nerve is an essential step in understanding clitoral innervation and sexual response.

Sex educator and researcher Emily Nagoski calls the female genital organ the "Grand Central Station of erotic sensation" in her book Come As You Are.

In an article on Medical News Today, the clitoris is also described as a female penis. This is due to a phenomenon known as "biological homology," which refers to the fact that all fetuses are born, as Emily Nagoski puts it, with "all the same parts, organised in different ways."
