Are you at risk of food additive allergies?

Does your throat become scratchy when you have a cold drink? Or your chest become wheezy when you eat dried fruit? Sulphur dioxide, sodium benzoate and tartrazine are well-known allergenic culprits that may be to blame for these symptoms.

Take action:

Avoid the following foods: fruit juices, and dried fruit, which are treated with sulphur dioxide to prevent oxidation; dried sausage (or "droëwors"), and boerewors, both of which are also preserved with sulphur; beer and wine (always remember that wine barrels are cleaned with sulphur dioxide); pickles and certain sauces; and hamburger patties. Make a point of reading food labels to check for these additives.
