People who lead a sedentary lifestyle and who are overweight have a high risk of getting back pain. Those with poor posture, older people and people who are genetically predisposed to get back pain are also at risk.

Pregnant women, people who smoke, people who overexert their backs during sporting or other activities and people who are depressed fall in a high risk category.

Certain types of repetitive work, such as factory work or truck driving, can also lead to back pain.
