Three million tested for HIV in Gauteng

Over three million people had themselves tested for HIV in Gauteng's health facilities since the launch of the government's HIV counselling and testing (HCT) campaign in April 2010, the province's health department said.

"As of 30 June 2011, 3,015,44 people tested for HIV in both public and private health institutions," spokesman Simon Zwane said.

A further 837,015 people were also screened for tuberculosis, 93,675 for cervical cancer, 36,439 for diabetes and 63,328 for high blood pressure.

Billions allocated to increase ARV numbers

"Since the launch, all public health facilities in the province provide a free walk-in service for health screening and HCT," he said.

Testing had also been conducted at provincial events, shopping malls, community gatherings and rural parts of the province where health facilities were not easily accessible.

The department had allocated R1.9 billion to the HIV/Aids programme to increase the number of people on antiretroviral treatment to 520,000 by March 2012.

HIV is a medical condition which damages the body's immune system and its ability to heal.
