It has been a busy year for Professor Linda-Gail Bekker. Her involvement in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic has thrown numerous curveballs her way, the Zimbabwean-born doctor told Health24.

"My job is to try to unburden the obstacles and find the solutions – that's how we move forward," she said.

Being the co-lead investigator of South Africa's Sisonke Covid-19 vaccine trial has taken up a huge chunk of her time, but for the 59-year-old, who has carved out a remarkably accomplished career, it's been a real work of love.
