The Delta Covid-19 variant continues to spread and has already reached more than 100 countries. It is the fittest and fastest variant to date, and according to experts in the UK, it is 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant first identified in the UK.

According to more recent research, the viral load in people infected with this variant is said to be roughly 1 000 times higher than in those infected with the original variant that first emerged in Wuhan in 2019.

The preprint study was carried out by the Guangdong Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) in China and was published on medRxiv and virological.org in July 2021.
