Malic acid and magnesium ease pain

Does fibromyalgia have you or someone you know struggling with muscular pain and other symptoms? Some good news is at hand. Recent studies have shown that the combination of magnesium and malic acid can significantly reduce the muscle and soft tissue pain associated with this debilitating condition.

Past studies proved that magnesium alone was insufficient at relieving pain and other symptoms. However, the discovery of the potential relief that a magnesium and malic acid combination can provide has offered hope to many diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain of muscles and joints in specific, tender areas of the body. Sufferers also experience fatigue, cognitive disturbances (concentration and memory) and sleep problems. Unfortunately, this is a largely misunderstood condition and many general practitioners won’t diagnose it. The condition is gaining wider acknowledgement in the medical community, however.

The research study

The clinical study of the effects of magnesium and malic acid on fibromyalgia sufferers was published in The Journal of Nutritional Medicine and used 15 fibromyalgia patients aged from 32 to 60 as voluntary subjects. These volunteers received a dose of 300 to 600mg of magnesium and 1,200 to 2,400mg of malic acid over a period of four to eight weeks. Every single case found significant improvements in the levels of pain in tender points. Some patients reported relief in as little as 48 hours.

Many respected doctors are in agreement. In a 2002, a review for the medical journal Clinics in Family Practice by Dr. Victor Sierpina and Dr. Ramona Carter stated that 200mg of magnesium taken twice daily, combined with 1200mg of malic acid taken once daily, is thought to ease fatigue, pain and tenderness in patients with fibromyalgia.

How does the combination of magnesium and malic acid promote relief?

The key to the success of magnesium and malic acid is thought to be their effect on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels in the body.

Both malic acid and magnesium are involved in the formation of ATP, the primary source of energy for the human body. This has led the researchers and other experts to believe that patients with fibromyalgia have lowered levels of ATP.

Magnesium and malic acid are critical nutrients for the production of ATP, and when body levels of ATP are low, the effects include decreased levels of oxygen in the muscles or muscle hypoxia. This can contribute to the breakdown of muscle tissue and explain the muscle pain and feelings of fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. Another subject of research has been the belief that aluminium toxicity may contribute to the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Both magnesium and malic acid enhance the detoxification of aluminium from the body.

Fibromyalgia is becoming more prevalent in the world’s population every day. Doctors are continuing studies into the effect of nutrients on the condition, as well as extensive research on other treatment options. With the use of malic acid and magnesium to combat the pain and fatigue caused by fibromyalgia, many sufferers are finding relief and a new lease on life.
