Weight loss offers better benefits for people with obesity and excess weight than those who are already lean, according to a major new study.

Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers studied various weight loss strategies and their health impacts on nearly 200 000 people (aged 24-78) between 1988 and 2017. They found that people with obesity who lost more than 4.5kg had a significantly lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Surprisingly, lean people did not benefit from weight-loss attempts and were more prone to developing type 2 diabetes and weight gain in the longer term.
