- Celebrities have been called out for emitting tonnes of carbon by using private jets for short trips.
- It is said that 1% of celebs are responsible for half of the emissions associated with flying.
- Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Oprah Winfrey are among the top 10 celebrities who emit the most carbon.
Hollywood celebrities have been taking the heat recently for causing carbon emissions when using their private jets for short trips. From Kylie Jenner, Travis Scott, and Oprah Winfrey to Kim Kardashian West, Drake and Taylor Swift, these celebrities have been labelled 'full-time climate criminals'.
The backlash comes after a Twitter account called Celebs Jets, run by Jack Sweeney, a University of Central Florida student, released information on Kylie Jenner and other celebrities' flight history. The account revealed that Kylie has been travelling with her jet for less than 17 minutes on a trip that would have been 40 minutes by car.
They also revealed that the Kylie Cosmetics owner has been taking other regular flights less than 15 minutes long. Adding fuel to the fire, Kylie previously posted a picture of herself and the father of her kids, Travis Scott, with two private jets behind them, one belonging to her and the other to Travis. She captioned the Instagram post, "You wanna take mine or yours?"
At the time, the post infuriated critics who claimed the mother of two was bragging about her privilege and showing no regard for the planet. Some complained that they had to make sacrifices to protect the earth, while celebrities were responsible for half of the emissions associated with flying.
Kylie Jenner is not the only celebrity who recently faced backlash for taking short private jet trips. Taylor Swift has also been at the heart of the issue as she was accused of having the highest carbon emissions - 8 000 tonnes - by sustainability marketing firm Yard. Her plane has allegedly taken 170 flights between 1 January and 29 July 2022, which equates to about 1 184 times more than the average person's total annual emissions.
According to Transport & Environment, private jets cause five to 14 times more pollution than commercial planes emitting two tonnes of CO2 in just one hour. The emissions have increased by 31% in recent years, between 2005 and 2019.
Taylor's team responded to the accusations, emphasising that the singer is not responsible for most or all of the trips taken via her jet. "Taylor's jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals," a spokesperson told The Guardian.
