The importance of rested sleep cannot be over-emphasised. A good night's sleep is important for overall health and wellbeing and necessary for a positive attitude towards each new day.

However, getting enough sleep is not as simple as one might think. Yes, it is important to get the proper 7 – 9 hours that is recommended for adults, but there's more to a healthy sleeping pattern than just that.

Having a good sleep helps support our bodies' natural functions. The five main stages are beneficial for the body, improving its immune system, processing emotions and knowledge, consolidating memories and balancing blood sugar levels.

It is important to remember, however, that too much of a good thing is not always good for you.

Dubbed "the world's largest sleep study", research from Canada says sleeping too much could be harmful to cognitive function.

The study from the university of Ontario suggests that too much sleep is just as bad as too little sleep.

The study surveyed 40 000 participants from around the world. It found that the ideal amount of sleep needed for adults is between 7 and 8 hours per night.

However, the researchers found that even one night of adequate sleep can improve cognition.
